Jon Olsen, center, runs into the Foresthill aid station at about mile 62 of the course.

Jon Olsen finishes in top 20 at Western again
Despite some challenges that waylaid him at the 49er Crossing Aid Station (about mile 93) more than he probably liked, Jon Olsen still managed to finish the Western States 100 Endurance Run, June 24, 2007, with 20:26:40, placing him as the 17th overall male. It marks the third consecutive year that Olsen, a 32-year-old teacher from Modesto, has placed in the top 20 of the ultra-marathon. Last year he finished seventh. The race started at 5 a.m., June 21, at Squaw Valley and finished in Auburn. Runners who completed the race in less than 24 hours received a coveted silver belt buckle. Those runners who finished the race in less than 30 hours received a bronze belt buckle.

Other ShadowChasers who started the race but did not finish include Leslie Antonis, Linda McFadden and Barbara Elia.

Silly runner, Trix are for kids
Six ShadowChasers ran the Trix Run, June 9, 2007, in Lodi, and five came away with medals. Also in the chase was former ShadowChaser Michael Dean, who came up from Southern California for a class reunion. As he confided during a cool-down run, he should have stuck with his usual pre-race meal of corndogs rather than trying a mega-burrito.

    The ultra-bug bites again
Nan Nguyen has caught ultra-fever and completed her first ultra, the Quicksilver 50-miler in San Jose, May 12, 2007. The 35-year-old Nguyen ran 10:40:47. Other ShadowChasers who completed the race are:

    Six weeks and counting
Jon Olsen continues to train and race well in preparation for the Western States 100-mile Endurance Run on June 23-24. The 32-year-old Modesto school teacher placed third in the Miwok 100K Trail Run, May 5, near the Marin Headlands with 8:35:48. He beat the likes of Scott Jurek, perennial Western States winner, who ran 9:04:09 and placed fifth. Other ShadowChasers finishing were Leslie Antonis with 12:47:44; Linda McFadden with 14:33:37; and Barbara Elia with 15:55:32.

    Back in the saddle again
Dave Barrett of Riverbank is back to his old form again. The 53-year-old triathlete took second in the men's 50-54-year-old age group in the mountain bike category at the Wildflower Triathlons Festival, May 5, at Lake San Antonio in Monterey County. His combined time was 1:14:53. The race consists of a 0.25 mile swim, a 9.7 mile bike ride and a 2-mile run. And we think he even managed to keep both his shoes on.

    Del Rio spears age-group win
Javier Del Rio, ShadowChase's 2006 male runner of the year, is back in form after breaking his toe late last year. The 73-year-old clocked a 21:42 at the Great Spear-It Run 5K, April 29, in Stockton. That was good enough for 30th overall and first in the men's 70-99-year-old category.

Nor' Easter rains on their parade
Neither rain nor sleat nor dark of night shall stay these marathoners from their appointed run in Boston. Well, maybe a Nor' Easter that blew in, dropping 3 or more inches of rain and lashing the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon course, April 16, with wind gusts as high as 50 mph.

The following area residents braved the conditions to finish the 111th Boston Marathon:

Adrian Crane, Derek Castle head to Everest
Adrian Crane, that Modesto ultra-runner and adventure racer, will make a second attempt to conquer the north route of Mt. Everest this spring. Accompanying him is fellow ShadowChaser Derek Castle and Crane's two sons, Christopher and Johnathan. You can view his progress on www.teamkarma.com or www.MountEverest.net. Adrian is climbing with a group called Monterosa Treks and is sharing a climbing permit with Werner de Jong's Dutch team. He hopes to summit about May 25, weather permitting. We wish everybody luck and a safe return.

Races begin to enforce no-headphone ban
The USA Track & Field recently adopted a new rule banning the use of headphones and other music devices at all USATF-sanctioned running events. The group, which governs U.S. long-distance running and track and field, adopted the rule to increase runner safety.

Previously, USATF guidelines just recommended banning musical devices for long-distance running events. Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minn., one of the first large races to be affected by the rule, has advised participants not to bring headphones or other music devices with them to the racecourse. If caught, athletes will have the option of surrendering the devices to race officials before the race.

Surrendered devices will be packaged and mailed back to owners within two weeks of the race. Participants who violate the headphone ban will be disqualified and their finishing time will not appear in official race results.

“The best advice we can offer to anyone hoping to avoid any inconvenience is simply to not bring headphones with them on race day,” says Grandma's race director Scott Keenan.

    They ran like the wind
Dave Barrett and Mike Callas, both ShadowChase members from Riverbank, took the race's name—Run Like the Wind—to heart, March 25, in San Ramon. The two placed well in the half-marathon, with Barrett running 1:38:11 and Callas running 1:54:33. And this time, it wasn't a deluge during the race like the last time Callas ran a half-marathon.

    Antonis keeps on rolling
Leslie Antonis, who qualified for her first Western States 100 this year, continues her winning ways in ultra-marathons by placing second in the women's division in the Woodside Trail Run 50K, Feb. 3. She ran 5:26:04 on the hilly course near Huddart County Park and Woodside.

    Two ShadowChasers win trail run
Jon Olsen and Leslie Antonis won the 50K Pacific Trail Run, Jan. 20, 2007, at San Pedro Valley Park in Pacifica. Olsen set a course record of 4:45:23 and was the overall winner, while Antonis won the woman's division with 5:58:04.

    Boyer hits stride again
Mike Boyer, who had been hampered by some small knee problems until recently, appears back in form as he won the mile portion of the Orient Express at Chinese Camp, Feb. 3. Boyer's time of 5:32.96 on the hilly course was more than 45 seconds ahead of second place finisher, Darrell Johnson of Stockton, who ran 6:19.88.

Wolfley, who turned 40 in December 2006, placed third in the women's 40-44-year-old age group and was in the top 10 women's masters in the Phoenix race.

    A Goofy idea
Three ShadowChase members did something really Goofy—they ran Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge at Disney World outside of Orlando.

The race consists of completing a half marathon Jan. 6, 2007, then turning around and running a marathon the very next day, Jan. 7.

Finishers of the half marathon receive a Donald Duck medal; marathon finishers receive Mickey Mouse medal.

Those tough enough to complete both races receive the two medals as well as a medal sporting the Disney character, Goofy.

Receiving the coveted Goofy medal were Lisa Baysinger (2:34:53 half marathon, 5:24:09 marathon), Randy Baysinger (2:34 half, 5:24 full), Leanne Jackson (3:28:16 half, 5:26:06 full), Roger Dial (2:35 half, 5:01 full) and Rick King (2:16:28 half, 5:13:24 full).
