The 100-mile Western States Endurance Run starts in Squaw Valley, Calif., and finishes in Auburn, Calif. The grueling race climbs 2,550 vertical feet in just the first 4.5 miles. From there, it follows the original trails used by gold and silver miners, climbing another 15,540 feet and ascending 22,970 feet. Those who finish in less than 24 hours earn a coveted silver belt buckle. Those who finish in less than 30 hours earn a bronze buckle. The course closes after 30 hours. This year the race was held June 25-26.
