Oakdale At the current rate of increase, the Flat Arch will surpass the New York Marathon in popularity by 2018. The 38 runners participating represented a 50 percent increase over last year. Of course it will be a sizzling 94 degrees on Flat Arch day in 2018, but by then the average Flat Arch runner will expect to cover just 2 miles. All of this is scientifically proven in the table below! Whatever the rest of 2006 was like, Dec. 31, 2006, the day we chose for the Flat Arch, was cool but dry lovely running weather. The Flat Arch started at 7 a.m. from Cindy's in Oakdale, and a huge crowd of 38 crossed the bridge over the river and spread into a thin line as we climbed away from town. This year three signed up for the 50 mile distance and stuck together the whole way. Strangely enough, the sun never did break through the thin clouds, but it stayed nice enough all day. Leslie Antonis, Earl Looney and Linda McFadden completed the 50 miles in 9:48. And two runners completed the 50K distanceAdrian Crane and Barbara Elia. Contributing to the good running was not just the weather but also the support and roving aid station provided by Allen Miller, Debbie Looney and family, and Cary Gregg who offered aid and encouragement. It was great to see so many runners out together. (Race Hander Outer of bits of paper and author of that great sketch map of Woodward Reservoir with the whited out bits and handwritten date)
